The Money & Budget apps worth installing

Money apps are the least exciting category here and the one that most reliably saves you money. The losses on a long trip are rarely dramatic: they are a few percent on every withdrawal, a bad exchange rate offered politely at a card terminal, and a budget you stopped tracking in week two. The tools below attack exactly those three, and the first two are solved before you leave home.

Wise

Freemium

Real-rate currency exchange and a low-fee spending card

While bank cards skim a hidden exchange margin abroad, Wise converts at the real mid-market rate; hold 40+ currencies and spend with a virtual/physical card. Also one of the cheapest ways to send money abroad.

Put all spending on the Wise card on a Europe tour; (don't) miss the hidden 5% on your bank statement.

Revolut

Freemium

Multi-currency digital bank; strong spending analytics

Wise's main rival; strong with instant spending notifications, category analytics and security features like single-use virtual cards. Use it minding the weekend FX margin and free-plan limits.

Pay a sketchy local site with a single-use virtual card; even if the number is stolen, it is useless.

XE Currency

Free

The classic currency converter that also works offline

Caches the latest rates and converts even without internet. The tool of the "how much is this in my money" reflex while haggling at the market; rate alerts also catch the right moment to exchange.

Offline in a Moroccan bazaar, instantly see what the 350-dirham rug really costs in your money.

TravelSpend

Freemium

The most practical travel budget tracker

Enter spending in the local currency, it totals in yours; shows the daily average and category split. It tells the "I have $30 a day" traveler mercilessly where they really stand. Works offline.

If day 20 of the Asia tour shows a $34 daily average, the app reminds you of the hostel option.

Splitwise

Freemium

Ends "who owes whom" on group trips

Splits shared expenses across people and produces one net figure at the end: "Ali → Ayşe 43 €". Zeroes out the on-the-road accounting debates; supports multiple currencies too.

On a rented-house holiday for 4, you pay fuel and they pay groceries; settle with one transfer at the end.

Numbeo

Free

Learn a city's cost of living before you go

Lists food, transport and rent prices city by city from crowdsourced data; compares two cities side by side. Answers the budget plan's "what does lunch cost there?" with real data.

Torn between Lisbon and Athens, compare the restaurant and transport lines and pick by budget.

ATM Fee Saver

Freemium

Shows which ATM does not charge a fee

Lists ATM withdrawal fees and limits country by country, bank by bank, from community data. In countries like Thailand that take 220 baht per withdrawal, knowing the right bank saves real money over a tour.

In Bali, walk 5 minutes to the fee-free bank's ATM and keep $5 per withdrawal in your pocket.

What is the cheapest way to pay abroad?

A card that charges no foreign-transaction fee, always paid in the local currency. When a terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, decline — that is dynamic currency conversion, and the rate is set by the machine's operator, not your bank. Carry a small amount of cash for places that do not take cards, and withdraw it in larger amounts to spread the fixed fee.
