Travel apps

The Tours & Activities apps worth installing

Booking a tour from the phone has one genuine advantage over the desk in the hotel lobby: you can read what people wrote after they did it. The apps here cover guided tours, skip-the-line tickets and the small local experiences that rarely have a website. The rule that saves money is simple — book timed-entry tickets in advance, book guided tours once you have seen the weather.

GetYourGuide

Free

Wide choice of tours and museum tickets, easy cancellation

City tours, skip-the-line museum tickets, day trips; most products cancel free up to 24 hours before. High review volume means you spot the bad tour before buying it.

Buy the timed skip-the-line Louvre ticket in advance; walk past the 2-hour queue outside.

Viator

Free

Tripadvisor's tour marketplace; one of the widest inventories

Largely overlaps GetYourGuide but hosts more operators in some regions (the Americas especially). Comparing the same tour on both platforms and buying the cheaper one is the standard tactic.

Compare the Chichen Itza tour from Cancun on both apps; catch the same operator $15 cheaper.

The leader for Asian activities and transit passes

In Asia it usually has the best price on theme-park tickets, Shinkansen/JR Passes, airport transfers and eSIMs. Get your Tokyo Disneyland ticket cheaper than the gate, as a QR on your phone.

In Hong Kong, bundle the Peak Tram + Disneyland + Airport Express in a single app.

The last-minute savior for museum and attraction tickets

Focused purely on museum/attraction tickets; delivers mobile tickets instantly. A ticket showing "sold out today" on the official site sometimes exists in the Tiqets allocation.

A morning run is the best city tour; Strava's heatmap shows where locals run, so you pick the safe, scenic route from it. Segments give you little challenges in every city you visit.

Run your 7 a.m. Barcelona along the heatmap's coastal route; see the city before the tourists.

Is it worth booking tours in advance or on arrival?

Split the decision. Timed-entry tickets to famous sights sell out and should be booked in advance — that is what the queue is. Guided tours, day trips and anything weather-dependent are usually better booked locally, a day or two ahead, when you know what the sky is doing and how tired you are. The price difference between the two approaches is small; the flexibility difference is not.
