Travel apps

The Food & Drink apps worth installing

Eating well while travelling is mostly an information problem: the good place is two streets away from the one with the English menu and the man outside inviting you in. These apps solve three versions of it — finding what locals rate, reading a menu you cannot read, and eating for less through surplus food and street-food knowledge. The best of them are strongest exactly where guidebooks are weakest: neighbourhoods.

How do I find where locals actually eat?

Look at where the reviews are written in the local language rather than yours, and at places that are busy at the local eating hour rather than at yours. Ratings written by visitors measure whether a place is easy for visitors; ratings written by residents measure the food. Most of these apps let you filter or sort in a way that surfaces the second group.
