The Internet & eSIM apps worth installing

An eSIM has quietly become the first thing experienced travellers set up, because it removes an entire arrival ritual: no queue at the airport kiosk, no passport photocopy, no SIM tray and no lost home number. You buy a data plan before you fly and land already connected. The apps differ mainly in coverage and in how honestly they price a regional plan versus a single-country one.

Airalo

Buy the eSIM before landing, be online at the gate

The most widespread store selling digital SIMs in 200+ countries; installs via QR in 5 minutes and ends the airport SIM queue and outrageous roaming bills. Prices vary by country; regional packages win on multi-country tours.

Before the plane touches down in Tokyo, connect at the gate with the eSIM you loaded at home, not on Narita Wi-Fi.

Is an eSIM cheaper than roaming?

Almost always, and often by an order of magnitude — roaming is priced for emergencies, a travel eSIM is priced for tourists. The exception is short trips inside a region your home plan already covers at no extra cost. Check whether your phone supports eSIM before you buy, and keep your physical SIM active for calls and one-time codes.
